Binns Sidelined for Month

Stevenage Borough boss Mark Stimson received mixed news from the medical team with less than a fortnight to go before the Conference season begins. Dale Binns knee injury sustained at Boreham Wood is worse than first thought and he undergoes an exploratory operation this week. The pacy winger had impressed in Boroughs early warm up games and is unlikely to be available until September. Better news on the other casualties with striker Darryn Stamp and keeper Alan Julian back in training. Both players could feature in the line up as Stevenage continue their pre-season programme at Southern League Premier Bedford.

Superblues Get Home Opener

Hertford rugby team will start with a home match when the new National League Three South season gets underway on 2nd September. Old Patesians are the first visitors to Hoe Lane and Superblues coach Graeme Walters will be confident of a first day win after doing the double over OPs last year; both teams finished in the bottom 4 and Hertford are hoping for an improved showing in their 3rd season in National rugby. The first away trip is to newly promoted Chinnor who move up from South West One. Canterbury who dumped Hertford out of the Powergen Cup last year and Clifton are the other new boys. The squad has been training throughout July and starts Saturday training in August ahead of 2 preseason friendlies, both at home

Cricket Roundup

Welwyn Garden City stayed in touch with Home Counties Division Two East leaders Radlett beating Hoddesdon in style. Rory Coutts purple patch threatened to give Hoddy a substantial total but his 91 lacked support and the eventual total of 180 was some way short of a challenging target. The Digswell pair Nick Lamb and Aaron Laraman soon confirmed this by scoring 76 not out apiece to lead City home at 6 an over. Radlett maintained their advantage with Potters Bar having no answer to Shane Burger´s 6-28. The home side were dismissed for just 66 although Radlett struggled to knock off the runs as Andy Colquhoun (5-26) gave the leaders a few nervous moments. In contrast batsmen were in charge at Stevenage who took the opportunity to claim third place with a thumping defeat of Sawbridgeworth. Gary Brown posted a magnificent undefeated 113 and Saeed Ali Kazmi (86) kept him company to take Stevenage to 264. Gareth Berg continued his marvellous season with the ball to take 6-52 and set up a 98 run win. Hertford came close to chasing down 252 as county opener Steve Cordingley hit 125. His dismissal late on allowed North Mymms to snatch a draw with Hertford 5 runs short. On a batsmens pitch Krish Canagasabey (6-80) kept the target chaseable and Wendell Roberts (7-58) enabled the strugglers to pick up useful points. However Knebworth Park lost heavily with David Lowe´s 68 the only positive note in a 110 run defeat

Rockets Suffer Agonising Exit

The closest possible finish saw Rye House Rockets Premier Trophy fate decided in a race off after both teams finished level on aggregate at the end of the Hoddesdon leg. After starring in Rockets charge to overturn their 30 point deficit from Thursdays first leg Edward Kennett was unable to overcome Sheffield Tigers Andre Compton in the extra race and lead the current Trophy holders into back to back finals. All round scoring by the home riders had set up the grand finale as both legs ended in exactly the same result with the excellent Kennett narrowly unable to administer the coup de grace.

Captain Oliver Leads Stevenage Comeback

Stevenage came from behind for the second time in their pre season programme to register another confidence boosting win at Farnborough. Luke Oliver, who arrived at Broadhall Way shortly after new boss Mark Stimson, played his first match as captain with Jason Goodliffe now appointed club captain. Stevenage conceded on 13 minutes when former Welywn Garden City striker Bradley Garness headed in a Ty Smith corner. Parity came 20 minutes later when a handball in the box led to Adam Miller slotting home the penalty. And Jon Nurse wrapped up the win at the second attempt when after hitting the post from 3 yards he stabbed home the rebound on 75 minutes
Boroughs next warm up match is at Bedford on Tuesday August 1st

Cents Raring to Return

St Albans Centurions return to action following a midseason break determined to hit the ground running at Huddersfield Underbank. Without a competitive match since their defeat to Bramley Buffaloes 3 weeks ago coach Alan Wheeler is expecting his side to show immediate form. " It will be difficult after the break but we want to win and to score some points. We have had a rest for the injuries to clear up. The squad is getting back to full strength." Wheeler will have to make do without star kicker Brendan Potts who sits out a 3 match ban and is likely to find cover in the half back position. Cents currently lie 6th in National League Three with a game in hand on the teams above them. The top 6 make the end of season play offs

Cricket Roundup

Wins for Radlett and Welwyn Garden City leave the Home Counties promotion places unchanged. Rory Coutts did his best to give Hoddesdon a challenging total at Radlett but his unbeaten century lacked support and Rob Smith responded with 94 not out to see the leaders home in under 40 overs. City kept in touch in a low scoring win over Hemel, Martin James (57) the only player to reach a half century at Digswell. Neither Stevenage nor Hertford could force victory on a flat pitch at Balls Park as Nazir Ahmed (115) and Gareth Berg (89no) took Stevenage to 315. Hertford never looked likely to threaten the target as Phil Carlson (59) ensured there were no scares for the home side. In the relegation scrap Knebworth Park lost to North Mymms and sink into the drop zone after a 2 wicket defeat despite 50s for Ryan Skeggs and Tom Jenkins

Hoddesdon took the honours in the regional round of the National Twenty20 Cup winning all 3 matches. The best performance came against last years champions Welwyn Garden City as Jamie Curtis (63) Matt Harris (54) and Rory Coutts (52no) set up a challenging 223-3 in 20 overs. Curtis then dismissed both City openers and after Murtaza Hussein (53) had given the champions hope Hoddy wrapped up a 78 run win
Hoddy´s 3 half centurions repeated the feat against Hertford posting 242 to win by 67 runs and completed the set by overcoming St Margaretsbury by 2 wickets

Rockets Pass Tigers Test

Rye House Rockets responded in style as the biggest threat to their home record was repelled. Glasgow Tigers arrived at Hoddesdon expecting the league´s top two riders, Danny Bird and Shane Parker, to seal victory. Ross Brady´s fall at the first corner gave home fans the jitters but Rockets No 1 Edward Kennett outmanoevred Bird to give Rockets the first heat. New boy Adam Roynon extended the lead partnering Raider Danny Betson and Steve Boxall´s all round display including a personal best saw Rockets to the win. An unexpected bonus point remained on the cards until Kennett´s late engine failure

Twenty20 Champs Seek Double

The current craze captivating cricket fans rolls into Hertford this weekend when Balls Park hosts the regional rounds of the National Twenty20 competition. A large crowd is expected on Sunday to see if last years champions Welwyn Garden City can repeat the feat by overcoming local rivals Hoddesdon, St Margaretsbury and Hertford.
The competition gives a chance for some new faces to shine as Hertfordshire are involved in a Minor Counties league match against Northumberland at Bishops Stortford. The City quartet of Aaron Laraman, Nick Lamb, Simon White and Ben Frazer will miss out as will Hertford´s run machine Steve Cordingley and spinner Phil Carlson.
All teams play each other and the action gets underway at 11.00
A bumper weekend starts on Saturday with a key promotion clash as 3rd place Stevenage visit Hertford. The Digswell club who are aiming for the league and cup double could retake top spot by beating bottom side Hemel if Hoddesdon win at Radlett.

Knebworth Park Stun Leaders

Knebworth Park´s cricketers turned in their best performance of the season to lift themselves out of the drop zone and stun Home Counties leaders Welwyn Garden City. Half centuries from Ben Frazer and Nick Lamb had enabled the Digswell team to set a challenging target but David Lowe responded in style to post his second century of the season as KP got home with 3 wickets left. Radlett take over at the top following a comfortable win at Hemel. Stevenage are into third with Gary Brown (54) starring in a consistent batting display that was far too good for North Mymms. Hertford posted the days highest total to hold former pacesetters Potters Bar with Herts opener Steve Cordingley hitting 105. Mark Saxby (5-62) ensured his work wasnt in vain as Bar ran out of time 22 runs short of their target

King Kennett Puts Monarchs To The Sword

Rye House Rockets 55 Edinburgh Monarchs 37

A fifteen point maximum from Edward Kennett helped the Rockets secure three valuable Premier League points against a determined Edinburgh side. With the teams seperated by just two points at the half way stage The Rockets looked to have a fight on their hands but a 5-1 from Kennett and Steve Boxall in Heat 10 proved decisive. New signing Adam Roynon made an impressive home debut his four points proving poor value for the amount of effort the 17 year old put in. His duel with Monarchs number one Theo Pijper in Heat 11 resulting in an important third place that stretched the advantage to ten. The Monarch's final attempt to keep themselves in contention ended in disaster for the visitors when Matthew Wethers and Derek Sneddon conspired to throw away an 8-1 advantage when Wethers tactical ride ended in exclusion after he lost control on the fourth bend.

Hussain Returns City to Summit

An all round display by Mo Hussain enabled Welwyn Garden City to regain the lead in Home Counties League Division Two East. Citys win at Radlett was achieved by Hussain taking 5-58 in the hosts total of 219-8 and then scoring 51 as the Digswell team passed the target with 5 wickets left. The win enabled WGC to leapfrog their opponents thanks to a superior tally of bonus points and with North Mymms beating Potters Bar WGC now head the table midway through the season. Mark Saxby struck an impressive 140 with good support from Chris Stead in Mymms total of 262, and Danny Duggan (5-39) soon ensured Bars reply would fall well short.
Stevenage move into 4th thanks to a narrow win at struggling Knebworth Park. Nazir Ahmed (54) was the only batsman to pass 50 as Stevenage were dismissed for 153 Chris Brook taking 5-58. Gareth Berg´s purple patch continued as he tore through the Knebworth batting with 7-23 leaving KP 22 runs adrift. Hoddesdon won the battle of the promoted teams Matt Harris (59) leading a consistent batting effort for Hoddy as John Ryan (5-62) kept the score to 251. Hertford started well in reply with county opener Stephen Cordingley (76) leading the way but a fine spell of bowling from Dan Smith (6-81) lifted Hoddy into the top half

Herts Face Tough Task

Hertfordshire cricketers go into their 3rd game in the Minor Counties Championship on Sunday knowing they will have to raise their game considerably against a stroing Suffolk team. After a disappointing 8 wicket defeat to Bucks Andy Lewis´s team are boosted by the return of Nick Lamb. The young Welwyn Garden City all rounder is available following his first class season with Durham UCCE. Herts also welcome back Knebworth Park´s Tony Skeggs and Hertford batsman Stephen Cordingley who impressed in the Twenty20 victory. The selectors have drafted in young Balls Park spinner Phil Carlson to boost their bowling options against the league leaders. Suffolk have had 2 convincing wins so far spearheaded by former Lancashire and England leg spinner Chris Schofield and Essex paceman Andy McGarry who took 19 wickets between them against Bedfordshire
The 3 day match takes place at picturesque Long Marston, just off the A41 near Tring where former skipper David Ward averages over 100.

Cents Prepare for Thompson Farewell

St Albans Centurions face a daunting proposition on Saturday when they visit last seasons grand finalists Bramley Buffaloes in National League Three. The match will be a moving occasion for the team as Eugene Thompson plays his last game before returning to South Africa. The big hitter from Springs near Johannesburg has been a key member of the Cents squad and coach Alan Wheeler says he will be sorely missed
"Eugene Thompson is one of our stalwarts, one of the blokes who has been tough for us and is the sort of guy we need against Bramley."
Thompson has spent 3 years at Woolams and played in the recent home match against Buffaloes which Cents narrowly lost.
Wheeler believes the game will provide an early indication of the grand final later this summer
"I dont think Hemel will make it. Bramley have been our toughest opponents over the last 5 years. This should be our strongest side of the year and will be a big test for us."

Draw Frustrates City

Former Home Counties pacesetters Welwyn Garden City had to settle for their first draw of the cricket season against Sawbridgeworth. After racking up a massive 276-8 with Mark Everett (79) one of four Digswell batsmen to pass 50, Sawbo never threatened to chase down the target but held out stoically with 6 wickets down. Wins for Radlett and Potters Bar has opened up a 15 point lead over WGC at the top of Division Two East.
Shane Burger and Nick Fielden were the heroes for Radlett, the opening pair remaining undefeated as Knebworth´s 216-8 was overtaken in only 38 overs. Anthony Pratt top scored for KP who remain in the relegation zone.
A nail biting finish saw Gareth Berg single handedly take Stevenage to the verge of victory against Potters Bar. With neither team passing 180 Berg struck 97 but eventually ran out of partners 15 runs short of the winning line.
Hertford climb to 4th place after shading a low scoring match at Balls Park. Scott Ruskin and Krishan Canagasabey tore through the Hemel batting with 5 wickets each to dismiss the visitors for 97 which the Hertford batsmen passed in under 24 overs
