Double Joy For Rye House

Rye House Rockets celebrated a great night for the club as the team kept up the pressure at the top of the table with a 56-36 at Stoke while back at the Hoddesdon circuit Steve Boxall was crowned Conference League Riders Champion. Chris Neath was the hero at Loomer road turning in a 15 point maximum on a night when all the Rockets including debutant Luke Bowen were at least paid for a win. Boxalls victory also came courtesy of a 15 point haul after closest challenger Barry Evans took an unexpected fall in his penultimate ride. Rockets now have a day off before entertaining Stoke on Monday at 2pm.

Local Radio Station Axes Sports Coverage

Local Radio Station Hertbeat FM has cut local sport from its schedule. The news was delivered to the stations team of volunteers in an e-mail from new Managing Director Brett Harley on Thursday evening. It is understood Mr Harley was out of the country at the time. The decision brings to an end 5 years of local sports coverage in the area which saw the Saturday afternoon show Matchbeat become essential listening for sports fans. After hearing the news Reporter Pete Hill said "this is a kick in the teeth for the voluteers who have worked so hard to provide a service and a great blow to the local sporting community." The station is now thought to be concentrating on a music based approach.
Should you want to contact Hertbeat FM about the decision you can do so by e-mailing Hertbeat@Hertbeat.com or Brett@Hertbeat.com

A Mixed Week for Natalie

Ware´s Natalie Munt was prevented from challenging for the mixed doubles title at the World Badminton Championships when partner Robert Blair had to withdraw with a stress fracture in his right ankle.

The pair had made serene progress to the last 16 beating Americans Khan Bob Malaythong and Mesinee Mangkalakiri 15-6 15-3 and were strongly fancied following the earlier withdrawal of Britains Olympic silver medallists and number one seeds Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms.

In the womens doubles Munt and Tracey Hallam were denied a quarter final place by Malaysia´s 7th seeds Pei Tty Wong and Eei Hui Chin

The 11th seeded pair beat Ukrainians Elena Nozdran and Larisa Griga 15-7, 5-15, 15-4
Munt and Hallam were back on court later on to overcome Kiwis Rebecca Bellingham and Rachel Hindley 15-5, 15-6 in round two.
Their next opponents are Malaysian 7th seeds Pei Tty Wong and Eei Hui Chin

Natalie Munt begins her mixed doubles challenge with Robert Blair on Wednesday when the pair who received a first round bye meet Americans Khan Bob Malaythong and Mesinee Mangkalakiri

Borough Succumb to 3 Card Trick

A game that promised so much ended with no points and 10 men for Stevenage. Graham Westley made 2 changes from Saturdays winning unit giving first starts to keeper Shane Gore and midfielder Ollie Berquez. The Borough custodian will wish to forget his first major incident when he fouled former Stevenage striker Justin Richards to concede a penalty from which Ian Selley opened the scoring
Despite the loss of Dino Maamria on 17 minutes for violent conduct towards Karl Murray, who was dismissed himself before the break, Borough then took control with midfield dynamo George Boyd netting twice to give the visitors an interval lead.
Within 5 minutes of the restart Gary Macdonald brought the Cards level and with the game heading for a draw Steve Ferguson curled in the winner for Boroughs arch rivals with 2 minutes left.

Borough Team:
S Gore - M Warner, J Goodliffe, A Henry, J Gregory - D Bulman, O Berquez, D Maamria, G Boyd - D Stamp, A Elding
Subs: J Nurse 74 (Stamp) D Williams 90 (Goodliffe)

In the nights other Conference matches Exeter beat new boys Kidderminster to move top while Accrington and Morecambe joined them on maximum points. Canvey Island, Halifax, Cambridge, Grays and York also won while 5 teams are yet to register a point - Aldershot, Altrincham, Southport, Scarborough and Gravesend

Hitchin powered to their first Southern Premier league win with Tommy Hayes scoring a hat-trick and Josh Sozzo the fourth as Northwood were beaten 4-2

Munt´s Double Chance in World Championships

Ware´s Natalie Munt is among the British squad competing in this weeks World Badminton Championships in Los Angeles. After arriving late due to the strike at Heathrow the world number one doubles pair Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms had to withdraw due to Robertsons ankle sprain. Munt now represents Britains best chance in the mixed alongside Robert Blair and partners Tracey Hallam in the womens doubles.

Hertfordshire pair and 16th seeds Liza Parker and Suzanne Rayappan have won their first round match against Scotland´s Imogen Bankier and Emma Mason 15-12 15-11.

May Shines at World Championships

Top FVS TRI triathlete Gavin May was among the honours at the weekend when representing Great Britain in the 35-39 age group at the Long Distance World Championships in Denmark.

Gavin was the 1st GB athlete in his age group and also 2nd home for GB overall

He was overall 12th in the world in his age group and recorded the 6th fastest bike and run splits. The sea swim had to be reduced from 4k to 3k due to the cold conditions and medical staff were on hand to treat competitors with jelly fish stings, a common occurrence in the area.

Gavin had previously represented GB in Nice and also qualified for and completed Ironman Hawaii in 2004. He returned to compete earlier in this year at Ironman France after an enforced layoff due to illness after Hawaii and so his result is even more remarkable.

Result
Swim: 00:58:24 rank 48
Bike: 03:16:48 rank 6
Run: 02:13:26 rank 6
Total: 06:32:47 rank 12th

Welwyn Chairman Stands Down

Terry Hazell has resigned as Welwyn Garden City chairman following 10 years at the helm of a club he has been associated with since 1968. In that time Terry has been a player, referee, and linesman as well as first team manager, Treasurer and Secretary. Terry’s decision to go is due in part to board-room differences of opinion, as to which direction the club needs to go, to both maintain and exceed the standard of football currently enjoyed at South Midlands Football league level.

Also standing down is Vice Chairman John Small, who has been involved with The Citizens almost as long.

Stepping up into the vacant roles of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and the Membership Secretaries role are Billy Knight, Joe O'Connor, Alan Rendall and Gary Hay.

The club have announced news of a high profile, Pre-Season Friendly to be played against Coca-Cola Championship league side, Barnet. The South Herts side are managed by the former Stevenage Boro supremo and Arsenal scout and advisor, Paul Fairclough. The game itself will be played at Herns Lane on Wednesday August 10th kick-off 7:45 PM.
