Hertfordshire Collapse lets in Suffolk

MINOR COUNTIES CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP EASTERN DIVISION
SUFFOLK v HERTFORDSHIRE
Sunday, 29th May to Tuesday, 31st May 2005 at The Victory Ground, Bury St Edmunds
Suffolk beat Herts by 8 wickets

Herts 355 -7 declared. Stead 77, Shoveller 79, Ward 57 and Frazer 50 and 82 all out
Suffolk 326-5 declared and 112-2.
Day Three:
This was not to be Hertfordshire’s day. Initially David Ward, Captain and leading batsman, was recalled to his school urgently due to a staff medical emergency and then the first hour and a quarter of the day brought a dramatic change to this match. After two days of steady batting on a very flat pitch the two opening Suffolk bowlers, Andy McGarry and Devon Malcolm, bent their backs and produced a devastating spell of fast bowling which saw Hertfordshire bowled out for 82 in a further 15 overs. Andy McGarry was very virtually unplayable and finished up with six wickets for 38 runs in eight overs. One of the umpires was heard to say that it was the most impressive opening bowling partnership spell he had seen in 16 years of umpiring.Suffolk then knocked off the winning runs of 112 comfortably to win by eight wickets.
Day Two:
On the morning of the second day Suffolk continued in much the same manner as Herts but rain held up play for nearly two hours from 1230hrs. The first wicket did not fall until the score was 168 when Andy Mawson, on 96, cut the ball straight to Simon White at point. Then Lee repeated almost the same shot to the same fielder when on 69. Chris Swallow (60) and Catley (58) then put on a stand of 93 for the third wicket. Long bowling spells by Ben Frazer, Steve Coleman and Paul Barker, all slow bowlers, made scoring difficult and Suffolk declared after 89 overs when they got to 326 for 5 wickets having gained maximum batting points.Hertfordshire were eight runs for no wickets when bad light stopped play after 4.3 overs.
Day One:
Herts won the toss and batted. Debutants Chris Stead (77) and Max Shoveller (79) put on an opening stand of 161 which was a great start for this match and the 2005 Championship season. They both fell quickly but the cause was taken up by Tom Jenkins (30) and David Ward (57) with a stand of 84. Later a quick fire 50 by Ben Frazer in 47 balls ably supported by another debutant Ryan Skeggs (29) ensured maximum batting points and a credible score of 355 in 90 overs before David Ward declared.Suffolk got to 18 runs on seven overs before bad light curtailed play for the day.

Citizens Choose Cowley

Welwyn Garden City Football have announced the appointment of Howard Cowley as their new 1st team Manager.

City chairman Terry Hazell said of Cowley’s appointment “We feel confident that Howard has the necessary experience not only in the South Midlands League but in all divisions of the Ryman league too. It is general knowledge that we are an ambitious club and promotion to either the Southern or Ryman league is anticipated in the next few seasons. We want to progress and in Howard we feel we have the right man to take us there”

Howard Cowley’s former clubs include Harrow Boro, in the Ryman Premier League, and the now defunct Tring Town who he led to their highest league finish for 13 years. Howard has also had spells at both Berkhamstead Town and Hemel Hempstead Town. But joins the Citizens from Herts neighbours and fellow South Midland Premier league side Harpenden Town.

Commenting on his appointment Cowley said “I am delighted to be invited to be the new Manager at WGC FC. The club has made considerable progress over the past few years, and my aim is to continue that. The foundations for success are in place, and I am confident that exciting times lie ahead.”

Cowley’s first task will be to select his assistants and will be speaking to existing staff of both the first and Reserve teams. Players will be expected back in training on Tuesday 5th of July.

Hertfordshire win County Shield Final

North Midlands 13 Hertfordshire 20

Hertfordshire won the County Championship Shield on their first senior appearance at Twickenham on Sunday beating North Midlands 20-13. But it was a close run thing. Hertfordshire dominated the first half and should really have scored more than the 13 points they had on the board at half time. North Midlands fought back in the second half and it was a nail biting finish as Herts, with a man in the sin bin, defended heroically to maintain their 7 point lead.
Once again it was the Hertfordshire pack, led from the front by skipper Dave Hesketh, that laid the foundation for success. The scrummaging was formidable and in the loose Hertfordshire dominated the driving maul. All this gave good possession to the backs, who particularly in the first half played, an expansive game and but for two or three last gasp knock-ons would have given Hertfordshire a substantial lead by half time.
From the kick off Hertfordshire showed their attacking intentions and a good break by fly half Richard Manion followed by the first forward drive of the afternoon caught North Midlands off side. Rob Colbourne kicked confidently and Herts were 3 points up after five minutes. Twice Hertfordshire ran the ball from deep in their own territory, with Colbourne showing good pace, but first Hesketh was tackled short of the line and then a knock on denied Herts a score. After 20 minutes, the Herts pack disrupted a North Midlands scrum, won the ball and Manion found a gap to score. Colbourne added the conversion. Hertfordshire dominated the rest of the half and strong running from Luke Sloan and further breaks by Manion set up scoring positions but twice knock-ons denied a score. However Hertfordshire got their reward just before half time when, after they had won a scrum against the head, North Midlands were penalised during the subsequent attack and Colbourne made it a 13 point lead at the break.
North Midlands put Hertfordshire on the back foot straight from the restart, when they ran a poor Hertfordshire clearance from deep in their own territory. This attack was stopped just short of the Herts line but quick recycled ball resulted in flanker Stephen Halbert touching down. The next 10 minutes were pretty even and when Herts were penalised at a scrum, Ollie Thomas closed the gap by another 3 points. Almost immediately a penalty for offside handed Hertfordshire a chance to take the ball quickly with John Sayers muscling his way up to the try-line. The lock could not get over the line, but scrum-half John McDonough switched the run of play out-wide for Manion to set-up Ray Adde who scored under the posts. Colbourne struck the conversion to put Hertfordshire 20-8 clear.
20 minutes were left and North Midlands did not give up. They put the pressure on the Hertfordshire line and a series of penalties by the defenders tested the referee's patience with the result that replacement prop Richard Bromham was sent to the sin bin. North Midlands ran that penalty and the next one and were finally rewarded when right wing Toby Wilson scored. 15 minutes were left on the clock, but a number of injuries meant that a considerable amount of time would be added on. North Midlands continued to apply pressure, but the Herts defence held. No sooner than Bromham had returned to the fray, another penalty against Hertfordshire resulted in a yellow card for Mark Sharpe. Around 5 minutes of time added on remained. The ball was scrambled back over the Herts line and a 5 metre scrum conceded. The seven man Herts pack put in a tremendous effort, drove North Midlands off the ball and the line was cleared. A few more moments of desperate defence and then the final whistle. Hertfordshire had deservedly won 20-13.
Winning Hertfordshire captain David Hesketh said: “This is a great end to the season for the county. We have won the final and won promotion and next season we will look forward to taking on the big boys in the County Championship. Considering we only have 20 clubs to draw from by comparison to other counties I think we have done very well. Personally for me to be at Twickenham lifting a trophy for a second time this season after winning the Powergen Intermediate Cup with Hertford this is a great thrill.”
North Midlands captain Duncan Hughes added: “Hertfordshire came out of the blocks better than we did and we gave away a lot of cheap ball. On the balance of the first-half they deserved it but they also defended outstandingly well to keep us out at the end.”

Five SuperBlues Go For County Shield Glory

Hertfordshire go into Sundays County Shield Final against North Midlands at Twickenham with 5 Hertford SuperBlues in the line-up. County skipper Dave Hesketh is joined by Alfie Church, Luke Hardwicke, John Mcdonough and Richard Mannion. It will be a particularly big day for back row Alfie Church who becomes the first player to represent the County in a Twickenham Final at Colts and Senior level. Church was also a member of Hertford's victorious Intermediate Cup side of 2003. “There will be a slightly different atmosphere this time – at Hertford we’d been building for years to win the Intermediate Cup, so this year with the county is a bit more of a surprise,” he said.“I’ve been part of the set-up with the county senior side for the last four years, though. It’s something I believe is important to take part in and it’s a nice reward to get to Twickenham again.” Sundays game kicks off at 1pm.

Hart for Hertford

Hertford Town have wasted no time in appointing former St Margaretsbury manager KELVIN HART as Dave Pentecost's replacement. Hart will be assisted by Ray Greenall and Dave Steedman, who both worked with him at St Margaretsbury. The trio left the Stanstead Abbotts based club last October after a very successful spell there, and have been on the lookout for a new challenge ever since. They beat a number of other well qualified applicants to the job. Hart goes straight to work, and will be looking to retain as many of last season's squad as possible.

Rockets Tie Postponed

Rye House Rockets Premier Trophy Semi Final with Sheffield Tigers on Saturday has been postponed as the Tigers have not officially qualified for the final four. Sheffield could lose their place as runners up in the Northern Group if Edinburgh win at Stoke by more than 36 points on Saturday. Edinburgh promoter, John Campbell, made an official complaint to the BSPA yesterday (Wednesday) on the basis that, whilst improbable, it was mathematically possible for his team to overtake Sheffield. The BSPA management committee upheld the complaint and barred Rye House from staging the match even on the basis that, should Edinburgh succeed in doing the impossible, the match would revert to being a challenge event and not the semi-final.

Classy Rockets Come Good in the End

Speedway Premier League
Rye House Rockets 55 Glasgow Tigers 40

Rye House Rockets maintained their position at the top of the Premier League but they were made to fight for the points by a stubborn Glasgow Tigers outfit. Just 2 points seperated the teams after the opening 7 heats but then a home maximum in Heat 8 from Edward Kennett and Daniel King opened up a gap Glasgow couldn't close. In the end the Tigers paid the price for being a two man team with the excellent George Stancl and the all action Shane Parker too often lacking support. Daniel King who scored paid 14 in his last appearance at reserve and Stuart Robson were the pick of the Rockets.

Scorers:
Stuart Robson 11+1
Edward Kennett 9+2

Previous Wins Mean Nothing Says Westley

Stevenage Borough boss Graham Westley has admitted that the fact that Borough have beaten Saturday's play off opponents Carlisle twice already this season is unlikely to have a bearing on the result at the Britannia Stadium. Speaking to the clubs website he said, "I do not agree that our previous wins over Carlisle will provide us with a psychological advantage. I think that they will try to think that they have made a signing or two. And I think that they will try to use the previous results to give themselves something to try to prove. We are totally expecting them to try to step up their level. We will prepare for that." You can read the full article at http://www.stevenageborofc.com/content/news/20050509.shtml

Report: Hereford United (0) 0 - 1 (0) Stevenage Borough (Boro win 2-1 on aggregate) by Andrew Grant

Dino Maamria was the hero once again for Stevenage, as for the second time this season, Boro came away from Hereford with a single goal victory. This time however, it led to Stevenage claiming a place in the play-off final against Carlisle - the biggest game in the history of the club.
Boro started the game with one change after Monday's draw, with the more defensively minded Barry Laker replacing Jon Nurse on the left hand side. It was going to be a nervy night for both sides and that was apparent for Boro in the first minute, when goalkeeper Alan Julian somehow managed to avoid handling outside the area, when he came for a ball that Ronnie Henry was heading back to him. That said, the first half chance fell to Boro, when Dannie Bulman forced his way into the box, but his weak shot was saved by Craig Mawson. The game then meandered along for a bit until the 18th minute, when Mickey Warner's mishit cross for Boro hit the bar with Mawson struggling. However, after that Hereford assumed control for the rest of the half. On 25 minutes, Julian was forced into the first of some quite outstanding saves, when he stretched out a hand to claw away an Adam Stansfield effort. However, Justin Gregory lost the ball and as he stretched to recover the situation, Stansfield went down in the box, the first of two unanswered penalty appeals. Boro were rocking at this stage, and on 31 mins Julian saved well from Craig Stanley twice, though the midfielder will feel that he should have hit the back of net, with only superb goalkeeping denying him twice. On 36 mins, a Mark Robinson free kick only just beat the bar as the last chance to make their pressure count slipped away.
The second half began rather tetchily, with an off the ball incident seeing Anthony Elding booked, and then Andy Tretton of Hereford following him for flattening Elding seconds later. Jason Goodliffe then saw yellow for catching Stansfield late, and from the resulting free kick Tretton headed into Julian's arms. Boro then made a couple of changes as they tried to open the game up. The talismanic George Boyd was introduced for Laker, who had done his job, and Jon Nurse came on for the ineffective Darryn Stamp. Within 5 mins Boro had scored. Nurse and Boyd forced a corner down the right which was taken quickly. From near the touchline Elding unleashed a fierce shot which cannoned back off the bar with Mawson a spectator. Dino Maamria, playing out of position in central midfield reacted quickest to head the ball into the unguarded net to send the travelling fans wild. Suddenly the nerves disappeared for Boro. Where they had been giving the ball away previously, they began to keep it as the energy seemed to drain out from Hereford. For the last twenty minutes, Boro cruised through without a care in the world, and Alan Julian, who had kept Boro in the game earlier on, was a virtual spectator. The final whistle blew to cue scenes of mass jubilation in the stand, that was matched only by those of the players on the pitch.
In the Non League Paper on Friday, Boro were the rank outsiders to progress to the final. Having scraped into the play offs on the last day, they now find themselves 90 minutes from League football. They have given themselves the chance of correcting the wrong of 10 years ago, a chance that if they play well, they will have every chance of taking. Bring on Carlisle!

Leopards Leave Ware

There will be no EBL Division One basketball at Wodson Park next season after the Essex Herts Leopards announced their intention to share their home fixtures between The Brentwood Centre and the nearby Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham. The decision will come as a bitter blow to East Herts Basketball fans who have enjoyed top quality competition at the Ware venue since the Ware Rebels reformed in the late 1990's. The Leopards will not totally leave town their junior programme will still use Wodson Park as a base while Troy Selvey will continue to coach at Chauncy School. The Big Cats will make one appearance in Ware when they take on local rivals West Herts Warriors on September 3rd.

Away Win Part of Westley's Plan

Stevenage Borough manager Graham Westley has told the clubs website that he always had in mind the fact that his team would need to win away from home to get into the Nationwide Conference Play Off Final. "We set out plans before these games believing that we might need to win away. So, we are in a good frame of mind. Our record in must win games has been good on the whole. We won at Aldershot, at Carlisle, at Woking and at Crawley in the run in. All tough grounds to visit. But we have a team with the experience to do these things. A lot will come down to experience now. And to ambition". He said. You can read the full article @http://www.stevenageborofc.com/content/news/20050504a.shtml

Ganet Quits City For Pastures New

Guillermo Ganet is to quit Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division side Welwyn Garden City to take over the reigns at Southern League outfit Berkhamstead Town. Ganet who took the Citizens to 3 County Cup Finals in his reign at Herns Lane has been unable to resist the lure of a higher class side closer to his Amersham home. In his time at Welwyn Garden City he brought in players from as far afield as The Ivory Coast and Columbia but failed to push the Citizens into a promotion place despite a promising start. The club will start the search for a new manager immediately.

Maamria Late Show Gives Borough Hope

Nationwide Conference Play Off Semi Final 1st Leg
Stevenage Borough 1 Hereford 1

A Dino Maamria goal 3 minutes from time rescued Stevenage Borough in front of a crowd of over 6,500 at Broadhall Way. Maamria rose to head in Jon Brady's cross and keep the tie very much alive. Earlier Hereford substitue Daniel Carey-Bertram had fired the Bulls in front with a 30 yard stunner. In a scrappy affair Borough thoroughly desrved their share of the spoils and will go to Edgar Street on Friday in the knowledge that a repeat of their league win there earlier in the season will book them a place in the final.

Subs Not Used: Westhead, Quinn, Laker, Hocking.
