Buntingford are safely through to the next round of the Aubrey Cup gary Christie and Tom Malins got 2 goals apiece in Towns 6-1 demolition of St Peters. Little Munden and Knebworth both bowed out. Knebworth losing 5-3 on penalties at Wormley, an Ian Baker goal failing to prevent Little Munden going down 2-1 at Bushey Rangers.

Wheeler Plans Winning Send off

St Albans Centurions head coach Alan Wheeler hopes to go out on a high when he takes charge for the last time on Saturday. Cents are already sure of a play off place in the National League Three season climax irrrespective of the result in their final league game against Warrington Wizards. Wheeler returns to Australia after the match but has not ruled out future involvement with the Woolams club. "If I came back I wouldnt play for any other club. I was originally just going to play last year but I have enjoyed it so much I stayed for this season. I knew my visa would run out halfway through." Farren Mahoney and Richard Smith will take over the reins for the end of season showdown. Wheeler expects a tough battle against the team that beat leaders Bramley last weekend and expects Cents to face Dewsbury Celtic in the playoffs. "This is a great club to play for and if I got the opportunity I would comeback to St Albans. It is a good bunch of guys here and we have stuck together to get us as far as we have gone."

Tuesday Football Roundup

FA Cup
Blues Made To Pay For Missed Chances
Ware 1 Burnham Ramblers 2
A Danny Jones goal 2 minutes from time ended Ware's interest in this seasons FA Cup as Glen Alzapedi's side were left to regret a hatfull of missed chances. Dominant for the opening period The Blues took the lead after 17 minutes through Sam Rose's sweetly struck free kick awarded after Steve Horsey was fouled on the right hand side of the box. Within 8 minutes Burnham were level thanks to one of only a few meaningful attacks as the Essex Senior League side struggled to get to grips with their Ryman League opponents. Gary Ansell providing the finishing touch past stranded keeper Russell Ling. Whilst that was a set back Ware continued to dominate proceedings Ramblers keeper David McCartney making fine saves to deny Chris Ellerbeck, John Frendo and Danny Wolf. The second period was a more even affair but again the McCartney denied the Blues the opportunity to go back in front coming smartly off his line to save Frendo's effort with 70 minutes gone. As the ball broke to the other end Ware were fortunate not to concede a goal of their own as Ansell's shot rebounded off a post allowing Danny Gudgeon to scramble the ball away. An injury forced Frendo to be replaced by Lee Chappell 12 minutes from time and Ware never found the same balance after that. Jones popping up to slam a crisp volley beyond Ling to send the visitors into the 1st Qualifying Round.

Spartan South Midlands League
Hertford are up to second place after a 4-2 victory over Langford. Kevin Cooper who missed Saturday's draw with Holmer Green, Lee Roberts , Leo Turner, and Ryan Redford with his 5th of the season were on target for Gary Connor's side. A Frankie Jowell goal was good enough to keep London Colney's unbeaten start in tact. The Blueboys are up to 5th after a 1-0 win at Holmer Green. Ian Hart celebrated his first league win since taking over the St Margaretsbury hot seat. Ben Herod, Craig Maskell and Chris McKay got the goals as Saints beat Welwyn Garden City 3-1 Anthony Beamish on target for the Citizens. Colney Heath are still looking for their first win a Steve Lacey goal not enough to prevent a 2-1 home defeat by Aylesbury Vale.

Powell OK To Face Tigers

Rye House Rockets reserve Ben Powell has confirmed he will be fit for Thursday's trip to face Sheffield despite having to withdraw from last nights 52-36 defeat at Scunthorpe. Powell fell heavily while riding for the Conference League Raiders in their KO Cuo Semi Final 1st leg and was forced to sit out the rest of the meeting. The club have confirmed that the second leg of the semi final will now form part of a double header on Saturday September 23rd with Boston providing the other opponents in the Raiders final league match of the season.

Superblues Make Winning Start

The new rugby season was ushered in at Hoe Lane with two of last seasons National League Three strugglers meeting in blustery conditions. With the Hertford and Old Patesians teams also containing several changes from last campaign the match was a stop start affair. Andy Johnson began his first game as Hertford skipper but it was counterpart James Pettigrew who drove over in only the 2nd minute. The visitors strong pack gave Hertford trouble all afternoon and centre Ben Parker extended their lead before the interval Jake White converting for a 12-0 advantage. Immediately from kick off prop Chris Downes was sinbinned for playing the man without the ball and Superblues took full advantage with Tongan Sione Onesi posting the first home points and Rob Colborne converting. 7-12 at the break. 7 minutes into the 2nd half which OPs had dominated Adam Roberts pounced on a wayward pass to score unchallenged and Colborne converted to secure the lead. The same combination extended Hertfords advantage to 9 points but with Superblues other Tongan recruit Talite Vaileti yellow carded for not rolling away from the tackle Old Pats also made numbers tell when Downes forced his way over. The remaining 4 minutes gave the crowd some nervous moments with Hertford displaying their renowned defensive qualities to pick up the 4 points. Their next league game is against newcomers Chinnor who had an even narrower first day victory, the other winners being Westcombe Park, North Walsham, Lydney, Southend, and Bridgwater & Albion

City Collapse Dents Promotion Hopes

Welwyn Garden City suffered a narrow defeat in the penultimate round of Home Counties Division 2 East matches that could deny them promotion after looking odds on for much of the season. A 5 run defeat at Sawbridgeworth rules out City´s chances of becoming champions and sees Stevenage overtake the Digswell team in the race for a place in Division One. Herts Simon White had set up victory with 5-22 as Sawbo were dismissed for 77 but a tricky pitch assisted the bowlers all day and Ryan Cunningham´s 5 wicket haul was enough to leave City tantalisingly short. WGC will now have to beat leaders Radlett in next weekends finale to have any chance of promotion. Stevenage stated their credentials emphatically after restricting Potters Bar to under 200. Taqueer Sikander led the successful run chase which was achieved in 45 overs the only disappointment being his dismissal four short of a deserved century. Knebworth Park are staring relegation in the face roundly beaten by Radlett who posted 234-8 after which KP´s batsmen had no answer to the inform Stuart Browne (8-25) Hoddesdon also suffered heavy defeat to North Mymms. Captain Richard Byrne took 6-84 as Hoddy struggled to contain the freescoring Mymms batsmen and Danny Duggan (5-39) put paid to any chance of victory as the hosts were bowled out for 128. Hertford´s Phil Carlson hit a half century as their rain affected match at Hemel ended in a tame draw
A tightly packed Saracens Herts league table means draws for St Albans and St Margaretsbury separates 2nd and 8th by only 21 points and keeps St Albans in with a shout of promotion if they beat bottom club Northwood next weekend.

Rockets Brought Down To Earth

Rye House Rockets 44 Kings Lynn Stars 46

After 4 straight wins the Rye House Rockets were bought swiftly down to earth by title favourites Kings Lynn on a dramatic night in Hoddesdon. With little between the two teams the Rockets fell to their first home defeat since June 5th 2004 when Daniel Nermark held off the challenge of Tommy Allen and Chris Neath in the final heat. Nermark proved the Stars trump card on the night returning 16+1 from his 6 rides. The Rockets were slow out of the gate all night and despite some heroics from skipper Chris Neath who managed to pip Kevin Doolan right on the line in Heat 11 always looked to be struggling. They were robbed of the services of Steve Boxall in the final race after it was discovered that he had lost consciousness following a crash at the end of Heat 12. Rockets must now regroup for a difficult trip to Sheffield on Thursday.

Rye House Scorers:
Edward Kennett 6

Steve Boxall 7+1

Pressure Builds As Borough Crash Again
Tamworth 2 Stevenage Borough 1

Stevenage Borough are still looking for their first win of the season after returning from Tamworth empty handed. The home side even survived for 23 minutes with ten men after Alan Neilson was red carded as Mark Stimson was left a frustrated man. Tamworth took the lead just after the half hour when Taiwo Atieno's shot was deflected into his own net by Borough's Jon Nutter. Atieno added a second heading home John Mcgrath's free kick 7 minutes into the second half before George Boyd gave Borough hope with his 57th minute effort.

Spartan South Midlands League

A goal from Matt Watts gave Hertford a 1-1 draw with Holmer Green at the Goodridge Stadium. The Blues are now 4th in the early league table. Colney Heath earned their first point after holding neighbours London Colney to a goalless draw. Welwyn Garden City made it two wins in a row beating Aylesbury Vale 2-1 at Herns Lane. Edgware maintained their 100% record at the top of the table thinaks to a 4-0 win at Kingsbury.

Herts Senior County League
Buntingford moved to the top of the Premier Division after a 2-0 win at Elliott Star. Gary Christie and Jan Stephens on target for Town. Hertford Heath are second on goal difference after a Phil Davies goal gave them a 1-1 draw at home to Bushey Rangers. A Fraser Triggs goal wasn't enough to stop Knebworth going down 2-1 at home to Bedmond while Sandridge beat Wormley 2-0. In Division One Lemsford maintained their 100% record by beating Park Street 2-0 with goals from Neil Draper and Chris Jones.
Hatfield Town are comfortably through to the 2nd Round of the Aubrey Cup beating Mill End 6-2 Leigh Cavenagh grabbing a hattrick. Plenty of goals in the 2nd Round ties with Cuffley beating Wodson Park 7-4 after extra time and Allenburys losing by the odd goal in eleven at Buckhurst Hill. Standon & Puckeridge's poor start continued as they crashed out 4-1 at North Mymms, no joy also for Codicote beaten 1-0 at home by Hadley.

Day Makes It Unhappy Night For Saints
Oxford United 2 St Albans City 1

A Matt Day goal 6 minutes from time was enough to give Oxford United victory against a St Albans side that matched the league leaders for long periods. Day drilled a left foot shot home from the left hand corner of the box just a minute after Saints Dave Theobald had headed home from an Adam Wilde corner. Oxford had taken the lead when Yemi Oudabade crashed home a shot from inside the box after being given too much room by the Saints defence half way through the second half. The goal coming just two minutes after the home side were reduced to 10 men when Chris Hargreaves was shown a the red card for a challenge on Tom Davis.
