Elding Returns to Borough Squad

Borough fans will be relieved to hear that with 11 days to go to the start of the Conference season hot shot Anthony Elding is back in training and will feature in the squad for Tuesdays friendly at St Albans

Elding had a heart to heart with Stevenage boss Graham Westley after missing the clubs trip to Spain and being left out of the team that lost to Peterborough on Saturday. Elding has now pledged his 100% support to the club, his team mates and his manager.

Afterwards Westley spoke to the Borough web site - "Ant is learning all the time which is why he is becoming sought after by several League clubs. Everyone makes errors. If he keeps learning then I believe that he can help us to win this season's Conference Championship. By reconciling his differences with the club, he has shown maturity and he deserves credit for that. Don't be surprised if he scores over 35 goals this year and creates a very big future for himself".

Centurion Nick Receives International Honours

St Albans Centurions prop Nick Surtees made his Scotland debut last Saturday - and made an immediate impact. The New Zealand-born forward played a major role in Scotland's shock 17-16 win over auld enemy England in the amateur international at London Skolars ground. It was the first time Scotland had beaten England at any level since 1996.

Surtees, whose father is Scottish, joined Centurions earlier this summer after winning the second division in France with Marseille. He has scored a try a game for the Cents in their push for the National League 3 title.

Nick is currently working as a barman at The Rats Castle on Hatfield Road.

Nick's fellow debutants included player-coach Nathan Graham - ex Bradford Bulls - who was extremely impressed by the St Albans' prop's display.

He has been selected for Scotland again for their final Parkhouse Recruitment Home Nations Championship match, against Ireland in Glasgow on 14 August.

Monday´s Speedway Result

Premier League
Reading Racers 44 Rye House Rockets 46 (agg 80-101)

A tremendous away double in 2 days. Considering Rockets had only 6 of the 15 race wins the result was a remarkable achievement as the Hoddesdon team had only 5 last places. Trailing early Daniel King fell while third as Brent Werner took heat 3, then Stuart Robson and Edward Kennett dragged their team back into contention with a 5-1 in heat 5.
Racers were ahead by 6 after heat 10, but with Tommy Allen partnering Werner and King to claim heats 12 and 14, the Rockets had their noses in front and although Matej Zagar took the final race, Zdenek Simotas exclusion following a fall ensured a hard fought victory
Rockets collect a bonus point and climb into 2nd place behind Berwick who visit Hoddesdon on Friday evening

Heat 5 saw Stuart Robson and Kennett ram home the visitors advantage and from there Rockets never looked in danger.

Stevenage 0 - 3 Spurs

Matchbeat

Justin Gregory lost the ball on the left wing, and a clinical break by Spurs left Fredi Kanoute the simple task of rolling the ball into the net. Boro also made changes at half time introducing new goalkeeper Shane Gore in the place of Alan Julian. He had to be at his bes to keep out multiple Defoe efforts, as well as a good effort from Mido. Chris Sullivan replaced George Boyd on the left wing, and his pace immediately set up a chance for fellow substitute Jon Nurse, who hit over with the goal at his mercy. Not long after that Spurs increased their lead when Mido powered the ball home after a corner was not cleared properly. Simon Weatherstone then forced Spurs no.3 keeper, Fulop into a good save with a 30 yd thunderbolt, before Defoe with 5 mins to go, calmly rounded Gore to slot in no.3.

The verdict for Stevenage, a good run out with some good individual performances. Nice to see Michael Brough back in a Boro shirt after almost a year out. As for the comings and goings. Williams and Gore caught the eye, with Berquez quietly going about his business. However, despite the fact he would have started behind the four other strikers, Graham Westley could regret losing Craig Mcallister to Woking. He looked a good prospect and will probably do well for them. The fixtures suggest that September is the toughest month early on, and Boro will look forward to rising to the challenge.

Stevenage 0 - 3 Spurs by Andrew Grant

Matchbeat

Stevenage kicked off their pre-season campaign with an entertaining affair against two strong Spurs sides, both littered with first team stars that played ineach half with 11 changes at half time. The weather matched the mood of the day as both sides relaxed into some easy going football. Stevenage included new signings Danny Williams on the right wing, and Ollie Berquez in central midfield alongside Dannie Bulman. Anthony Elding and Dino Maamria started up front, despite the former having put in a written transfer request during the close season. There was however no Jason Goodliffe in the side, so Maamria stepped up to take the captain's armband. The first half was a fairly even affair, but the gulf in class was evident between the two sides. Despite this Boro were more than holding their own and almost scored, but Elding's shot was blocked by the gigantic Tom Huddlestone. Spurs took the lead 2 minutes before the break when

McAllister Agrees Woking Move

Stevenage Borough have agreed terms with Woking for the transfer of striker Craig McAllister. McAllister still has to agree personal terms but is expected to complete the move shortly. With 4 recognised strikers ahead of him in Manager Graham Westley's thoughts it was no surprise that Borough considered him surplus to requirements.
