Bowen Blow Ruins Rockets Win

Rye House Rockets 49 Workington Comets 41

In a meeting described by Promoter Len Silver as "the toughest ever staged at Hoddesdon" the Rockets held on to gain two vital Premier League points despite losing Ross Brady and Luke Bowen to injury. Brady never recovered from a first ride fall in Heat 3 while Bowen broke both bones in his lower leg after flying some 20 yards straight over the safety fence trying to avoid Comets Paul Thorp who also ended up in hospital with a brokem left foot. Team Manager John Sampford did a masterful job of juggling his remaining resources to keep the Rockets in front despite being forced to field a single rider in four races. Steve Boxall was again in unbeatable form recording his second paid maximum while skipper Chris Neath brought the crowd to their feet by fighting back from a 15 metre penalty to catch Tomasz Piszcz on the line in Heat 7 only to be denied the victory by referee Chris Gay. Rockets now have 13 days to shore up their injury hit line-up before the visit of Redcar on June 17th.
