Kinsley To The Rescue As Citizens Get Another Chance
Newmarket 2 Welwyn Garden City 2 after extra time
Alex Kinsley’s goal 5 minutes from the end of extra time kept the Citizens hopes of FA Vase glory alive after a dramatic afternoon at Cricket Field Road. Howard Cowley’s team were forced to come from behind twice despite creating a host of chances. Quick to settle the Citizens should have taken the lead after 20 minutes when Nick Brindley’s powerful shot came back off the right hand post. Bradley Garness and Matt Wardle also had good chances before the break as Newmarket failed to match the visitors work rate. There was more of the same at the start of the second half Wardle seeing his close range effort well saved before Brindley was again denied by the woodwork. It looked as if the Citizens chance had gone when Sam Reed’s sharp finish put the Jockeys ahead with 20 minutes to go but second half substitute Mark Seller forced the game into extra time smashing home from 10 yards in the 85th minute. Paul Shaw looked to have booked Newmarket a place in the last 16 pouncing on Craig Mackay’s mistake as both teams began to tire. But with just 5 minutes left Alex Kinsley’s cool finish from the right hand side of the box set up a replay at Herns Lane next Saturday.
